I'm not the type to use cash. Nevertheless, I've carried some "emergency" cash for a long time now. "Emergency" was roughly defined as "having nothing else, buying a train ticket home".
Lately, I've realized that the amount I'm carrying didn't change since middle school. Therefore, it doesn't account that 1) train tickets are much more expensive these days, and 2) I'm moving much longer distances. I definitely won't be able to buy a ticket for that money.

Best Buy is apparently Citibank. Also, they're partly owned by a conservative think tank. I talk about it at blog.nitpicking.com/2024/03/be

“For millennials and the younger generation Z and Alphas, who may never be able to afford to buy a home or retire at a reasonable age, there is a growing feeling online that hard work is fortifying a system that, at best, is giving them nothing back and, at worst, is actively screwing them over. […] The goal of a softer life is more time and energy for what makes you happy and as little time as possible focusing on what doesn’t.”

every day I wake up and think "what can I buy that will bring me happiness today" and the answer is always the same: nothing. Donating, on the other hand, is incredibly satisfying.

Alejandro Gomez has been without proper running water for more than three months. Sometimes it comes on for an hour or two, but only a small trickle, barely enough to fill a couple of buckets. Then nothing for many days.
Gomez, who lives in Mexico City’s Tlalpan district, doesn’t have a big storage tank so can’t get water truck deliveries — there’s simply nowhere to store it. Instead, he and his family eke out what they can buy and store

“We're at the end of a vast (…) con of internet users, where ultra-rich technologists tricked their customers into building their companies for free. And while the trade once seemed fair, it's become apparent that these executives see users not as willing participants in some sort of fair exchange, but as veins of data to be exploitatively mined as many times as possible, given nothing in return other than access to a platform that may or may not work properly.”

I need to go back and put together a list of all the things I do differently now compared to when I started trading. It's wild how pretty much nothing is the same.
I just received an email out of the blue from one of the services I used to subscribe to for stock picking and it was like getting a jolt of panic, PTSD like behavior. "OMG what are they saying to buy now????????? earnings were bad??? OMG" -- "oh wait, I don't do this anymore"
